Coming September it will be two years since I made the big move to Sweden.
During this time, I had not had the chance of going back to the place where it all began: Gothenburg.
See, the thing is that my fascination for Sweden didn’t really start in new hometown Stockholm, but in Gothenburg, where I spent several short holidays visiting my friend aka bro bro aka sister Maral.
I have so many good memories from back then that this city certainly occupies a special place in my heart. My excitement to finally go back was huge!
As in any trip of mine, food is the main thing on the list – I already had some spots I wanted to check out in mind.
One thing I love about Stockholm (dare I say Sweden) is that veganism has become quite the big deal. Almost every restaurant has a vegan option on the menu or can easily adapt, since it’s not strange for someone to come asking for it.
Gothenburg lived up to that standard and, in the full day I had to explore, I could gather a couple tips that I’m just about to share…
First mission of the day was, as personal tradition dictates, finding the best latte in town. This was no hard task since this is the host city for da Matteo. These guys won BIG TIME during the last Swedish Barista Championship, so no doubt I had to pay them a visit.
One city stroll later, I´m sitting down at their terrace, enjoying the warmer-and-sunnier-than-Stockholm weather, sipping on an iced oat latte.
For lunch we headed to Open New Doors, a spot I found out about a couple months back during the Fast Food Mässan.
“All our food is natural, produced from scratch and free from animals, refined sugar, vegan and organic” – THIS is what I like reading upon entering a restaurant!
Coziest location over a small bridge, felt like eating at a lovely greenhouse. I tried out their Pasta Pesto Valencia with zucchini noodles (time to get a spiralizer!) and some refreshing ginger kombucha.
…don’t miss out on their raw desserts!
The big surprise of the trip was Brewers Beer Bar. Boyfriend happens to enjoy beer tasting as much as I enjoy my latte quests, and appreciates spots like this (gotta compromise~).
Picture a street closed to traffic, the restaurants have taken over with tables, afternoon sun still shining bright, people is chatting and having a nice time, super hip atmosphere…this is where the bar is located, not bad!
Any place serving alcohol in Sweden must by law also serve food. I was speechless when I ran through the menu, un-ex-pec-ted!: three different vegan pizzas to choose from (not to mention sourdough) and a 100% vegan desserts menu as well.
Choosing was hard and I, once again, wished I had at least three different bellies to feed. I went for the Sweet Plant Feed – sweet potato and ginger cream, tamari mushrooms, cashew and lime “cheese”, Spanish tomatoes… say no more!
Let’s not forget to mention that they have a WIDE variety of amazing beers to offer and are often rotating them.
This one goes to my favorite hangouts list!
This is my recollection for one happy day of Gothenburg strolling – more than satisfied hearts and bellies at the end of the day. In for a longer stay next time!
