Last week I had the pleasure of meeting Chris Burillo, a food lover who is starting a new trend here in Panama.
Chris is the founder of: Panama Food Box Delivery, a business that, as its name says, delivers food boxes within Panama City.
The boxes are conformed mainly by fruits or vegetables. You may find different sizes and combinations including tropical fruits like: watermelon, papaya, pineapple, bananas, melon, etc.; and fresh veggies like: lettuce, tomatoes, celery, carrots, squash, etc.
The prices are basically the same ones that you would pay at a regular supermarket, with the advantage that the delivery cost is included and you get the goodies at your front door. Prices may very depending on the size you choose, they can be between 14 to 20 dollars for 2-3 persons boxes, which I consider a very fair price.
You may also customize your box or ask for special fruits or veggies or go for a Gourmet Box which will include a variety of fruits or veggies from more luxurious gatherings.
I find 3 main advantages in using this service:
1. I’ve noticed there’s so much traffic lately here in Panama, so if I want fresh fruits or veggies (which you gotta buy often, since veggies and fruits have not so long-lasting fresh taste), this saves me the hassle of going out to the supermarket.
2. I don’t have a car, so mobilizing to the supermarket is even trickier and I have to carry all the weight back home, or pay for a taxi which ends up being more expensive than the prices Chris has for the fruits and veggie boxes. Also, I can imagine it being super handy for older people who can’t come out of the house much.
3. Last one, and probably the most important one: Chris goes to the Farmer’s Market (Mercado de Abastos) to hand pick every single one of the items in the boxes. This is quite helpful, since you know that an expert is choosing the fruits and veggies for you and you can be sure that what you get home is fresh and of good quality!
I don’t currently live in Panama, but I’m glad Chris had the initiative to start this sort of business here. I would totally recommend it to people living or coming to visit Panama.
Place your orders 2 days beforehand preferably, you can do this online or over the phone. Chris delivers every Tuesday and Saturday.
